10 Quick Questions
1. Have I confirmed my pregnancy with a medical professional and had an ultrasound?
Tip: New Hope Center’s registered nurses are trained in limited ultrasound and can confirm the location of the pregnancy (inside the uterus), gestational age (how far along you are), and viability (by measuring heart rate). This is important information to have before making a decision about your pregnancy.
2. Have I been tested for STIs and screened for Rh factor and/or received a Rhogam shot from the clinic if needed?
Tip: Untreated infections or Rh incompatibility can cause serious health problems when seeking an abortion. Be informed so you can take care of your health.
3. Have I explored all options for my pregnancy (parenting, adoption, abortion)?
Tip: Knowing your options empowers you to make a fully informed decision.
4. Do I understand the physical risks of abortion (pain, bleeding, infection)?
Tip: All medical procedures carry risks. If you schedule an abortion, ask the clinic about what to expect and what their emergency care plan is if you experience any of these risks. You can speak with a New Hope Center nurse about potential physical risks by calling (859) 341-0766.
5. Do I understand the possible emotional effects and know where to get support?
Tip: Many women experience lasting emotional challenges after an abortion such as guilt or regret. At New Hope Center, you can make an appointment to speak with a mentor who has also experienced abortion and can help you process what you are feeling.
6. Has the abortion clinic explained how they handle complications or emergencies?
Tip: Ask if they have a clear emergency plan of care if complications arise.
7. Does the abortion provider have hospital admitting privileges nearby?
Tip: Providers with admitting privileges to a nearby hospital can ensure proper care if complications occur.
8. Have I checked the abortion clinic and provider’s safety and legal record?
Tip: Make sure the clinic is licensed, and the provider is board-certified with no major disciplinary actions. To find out more about the provider, you can contact your state medical board at fsmb.org/contact-a-state-medical-board/.
9. Do I know my legal rights and protection, including the right to change my mind and say no?
Tip: No one can force you into an abortion, including your parents or the father of your baby. You have the right to a voluntary decision. If you are being pressured to get an abortion you don’t want, contact New Hope Center at (859)341-0766 for help. If you feel unsafe at any time, call 911 immediately.
10. Have I thought about what I would do if I change my mind after starting a medication abortion (taking the abortion pill)?
Tip: Make sure you feel fully in control of your decision. If you start a chemical abortion and change your mind, abortion pill reversal may be an option. Go to abortionpillreversal.com or call the 24/7 Helpline at 1-877-558-0333 for more information.
