A healthcare professional explains the effectiveness and timing of abortion pill reversal during a virtual consultation.

If you’ve taken the first drug in the abortion pill process and are considering changing your mind, you may still have a chance at continuing your pregnancy.

Abortion pill reversal has a success rate of 64 to 68% if the process is started between 24 and 72 hours after taking mifepristone.

Contact the Abortion Pill Reversal Network’s 24/7 Helpline promptly so you can discuss your situation and start the reversal process.

How Does the Abortion Pill Reversal Process Work?

Medical abortion typically uses two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone, a hormone needed for a pregnancy to continue. Misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Abortion pill reversal works by reintroducing progesterone into the body to counteract the effects of mifepristone.

How Effective Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

According to one study, around 64–68% of pregnancies continued following APR, with no increase in birth defects.

While reversal results cannot be guaranteed, many women have successfully continued their pregnancies after beginning the abortion pill reversal treatment.

Progesterone has been used for more than 50 years in pregnancy care for women with a history of miscarriage or related concerns.

Why Timing Matters

Abortion pill reversal is most effective when started 24–48 hours after taking the first drug, mifepristone. However, it is still worth reaching out if more time has passed.

Some women have managed to continue their pregnancy when starting APR within 72 hours. If you are unsure whether APR is still an option, speaking with the Helpline can help you evaluate your situation and determine your next steps.
