If you’re considering abortion in Kentucky, it’s essential to know that it’s prohibited unless a physician deems it necessary due to a medical emergency. However, as some women may turn to out-of-state procedures, it’s critical to understand the risks and side effects before making a decision.

While New Hope Center does not provide or refer for abortions, we’re committed to equipping you with trustworthy information. Continue reading to learn what to consider.

The Two Types of Abortion

Each abortion method works differently and is used at different stages of pregnancy.

Medical abortion typically involves two drugs. The first, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which sustains the pregnancy. Without this hormone, the pregnancy can no longer continue. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Surgical abortion uses suction, drugs, and/or surgical tools to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. The method used often depends on how far along the pregnancy is.

It’s crucial to understand what you may experience during and after each abortion method.

Side Effects

With a medical abortion, women will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, which can vary in intensity. However, other side effects can occur, including:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Chills

Surgical abortion typically causes mild cramping and spotting or light bleeding, which can last for up to several days.

Potential Health Risks

Though not guaranteed, both types of abortion come with certain risks. Knowing these risks will help you make an informed decision and consider your health history.

Medical abortion-associated risks include:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
  • Incomplete abortion, which may require surgical treatment (this occurs when some of the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus)

Surgical abortion-associated risks include:

  • Uterine perforation (a surgical instrument punctures the uterus)
  • Cervical damage
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (known as Asherman’s Syndrome)
  • Infection

If you feel that something is “off” or experience warning signs like a prolonged fever or bleeding that won’t stop, it’s critical to seek immediate medical attention. Your health is the priority.
