What Is The Morning-After Pill?
Also known as Plan B, the Morning-After Pill is an over-the-counter medication that can be used to prevent an unwanted pregnancy from occurring if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
It’s important to note that Plan B does not terminate a pregnancy, but rather prevents it. It uses defense mechanisms to make sure the body does not begin to develop a pregnancy in the first place.
Plan B uses the following methods to prevent pregnancy from developing:
- It prevents the body from ovulating so an egg is not released.
- If an egg is released, the medication blocks it from fertilizing.
- If an egg is somehow fertilized, the medication prevents the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
Side Effects Of The Morning-After Pill
The Morning-After Pill is not as harmless as it sounds. There are side effects to know before deciding if you want to take it. Common side effects of Plan B include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness
- Breast tenderness
- Bleeding between periods or heavier menstrual bleeding
- Lower abdominal pain or cramps
- Fatigue
- Headache
Is It Effective?
If taken between 48-72 hours after unprotected sex, the Morning-After Pill is known as 61% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy. The earlier the Morning-After Pill is taken, the more effective it will be. If it’s taken 24 hours after unprotected sex, it could be 95% effective in preventing pregnancy.
